Doctors and Dentists

Being sick is stressful under any circumstances.  But when you’re sick  as a stranger in a strange land, the stress multiplies.  Here then are some leads that you might want to consider checking out before illness or injury come knocking.  The health professionals on this list were recommended by Anglophone expats in the Paris region. Not all speak English. Or the doctor may speak English but not the office staff. Even so, folks with relatively little French have had successful interactions with them.   Please note that this list is not by any means exhaustive.  If you can make a recommendation for others, please do so in the comments. Another source worth consulting is the U.S. Embassy’s list of English speaking doctors.

If you are covered by the French health care system, be aware that not all of these doctors are conventionné, meaning that not all accept Social Security’s fees as payment in full. If you have a mutuelle (gap insurance typically provided by an employer), it may cover the extra charges. If you are covered only by a health insurance carrier in another country, expect to make payment in full at the time of service. Please note also that not all health professionals accept credit cards; bring cash or a check.

  1. I would add Dr. Bosquet (Endocrinologist) to this list. He is on rue de Sontay, just off Place Victor Hugo roundabout, on the right side of the street about half way down the street. Sorry, I don’t have the exact address! He speaks decent English and is very thorough.

  2. I appreciate what you say and you are right. I had surgery this June and have been living in France for 10 years. I was a reck before surgery and part of it was due to not being able to communicate as I would in the US (with hospital staff). However, in the end my French improved. But, I must tell you that some of these doctors, take advantage of the fact that one is an Anglophone and therefore, thinks you have more money. It doesn’t make them all good docs. I have seen some of them when I first came to France and can say this. The doctor I had for my surgery was totally with Securite Sociale and spoke enough English that I was comfortable with him. He was a great doc. Just a “heads-up” about this and an addendum!

  3. Peter (the other)

I have had wonderfully competent experiences with the three different Docs (General) I have seen over the years, although one certainly had herself a bad case of Irritable Frenchiness. If you are in the 5th, I have been very content with:

    Partouche-Fhima, Nathalie
    29 bis RUE MONGE
    75005 Paris

    Téléphone : 01.43.25.42.56
    Médecin généraliste

She is right at the Cardinal Lemoine Metro, a modest office – answers her own phone – but usually can see you quickly, competently and charges the standard (was it 28 or 32 euros I do not remember).

  4. Just arrived in Paris from Lugano, Switzerland. My 11-year old fell off his trotinette this morning and chipped a tooth. This list was a life-safer. Merci mille fois!!!

  5. Everyone should know:
Dr. Jean-Jacques Dupuis: 24, rue de Madrid 75008 Paris
    Tel: 01 45 22 29 15 ; Tel: 01 42 93 59 06
Is perhaps the finest dentist I have ever encountered. The American Embassy lists him under “Dentists”, but his specialty is as a prothodontist (trained at Northwestern University, among other places).
    Respectfully submitted, Don Bailey
